Job Summary:

Under limited supervision, the site foreman manages and administers the job site and crew in order to carry out the project to plan. Reporting to the Superintendent, the site foreman shall have a background in excavation, civil construction projects. The site foreman shall possess solid leadership skills, a proven ability to direct the work of others, an ability to make quick decisions, be well-organized and favor safety above everything else. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

The Site Foreman provides leadership and is responsible for, although not limited to:

  • Supervision and leadership
  • Ensuring the safety of crew members
  • Following HSE regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Planning and scheduling
  • Productivity of crew members and quality control
  • Administration and paperwork

General duties by function: 

  • Health, Safety, & Environment
    • Knowing, understanding, communicating and ensuring compliance with HSE policies and procedures
    • Facilitate mandatory safety tool box meetings
    • Ensuring completion of initial safety and hazard assessments
    • Participating in safety/incident investigations
    • Ensuring that vehicle and equipment checks are carried out
  • Leadership and Supervision
    • The site foreman is required to be involved and supportive of any day to day disciplinary decisions. This includes:
      • Communicating the job to and with the crew
      • Assigning crew tasks
      • Recognizing, addressing and resolving issues/problems among/between crew members
    • Communicate daily with the superintendent to discuss the next days' and weeks activities
    • Be onsite and have the job set up and ready for the crews start time
    • Direct crew in a respectful and courteous manner
  • Project Execution
    • Ensure you have read and understand the project specifications and drawings, if in doubt ask the superintendent or project manager
    • Double check with superintendent, before work commences, that a BC 1 Call has been notified, and all other utilities in the area have been contacted, and all services have been located
    • Coordinate the daily labour/equipment/trucking requirements with the superintendent, in a timely manner
    • Coordinate with the superintendent, for materials required on site, in a timely manner
    • Check deliveries to site to confirm the correct quantities and sizes are delivered and that the materials meet specification and are not damaged
  • Be responsible for small tools, and ensure they are maintained and available for use
  • Ensure rental equipment is returned as soon as possible
  • Ensure any extra work is communicated to the superintendent or project manager before commencing, unless otherwise directed
    • Accurately complete Daily Field Reports (DFR) showing all hours for crew under the appropriate cost code, as well as all materials delivered to site, and showing daily productions and issues/delays encountered
    • Ensure that at the end of each shift, the site is left in a safe condition, with proper signage and cones in place to ensure smooth traffic flow

Qualifications: 

Skills & Experience Requirements 

  • Sound knowledge of excavation, civil construction and building techniques and ability to read and interpret contract drawings and specifications
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy

  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
  • Proactive problem-solver that can manage difficult situations with positive results
  • Have a thorough understanding of levels and grades for pipelaying, road construction and site grading
  • Have a thorough understanding in shoring requirement for excavations, and be able to realize what is safe and what is not
